Leaders at St. John
Church Council is responsible for the overall vision and mission of St. John, sets priorities for ministry, evaluates ministry effectiveness and approves the budget.

The Board of Trustees are the legal corporation of the church and responsible for care of the physical plant, insurance matter, building use policies and legal matters.

Staff-Parish Relations is our personnel committee and supervises the pastors, assists the superintendent in times of pastoral changes, gives guidance to the senior staff in their supervision of the administrative and program staff, reviews staffing policies, etc.

Finance Team is responsible for the day-to-day financial operations of the church. Creates the annual budget, authorizes special offerings and fundraisers.

Worship Committee assists the pastors in planning worship, both weekly and special events, and the care and seasonal decoration of the sanctuary.

Hospitality and Congregational Care extend the congregation’s love to our students and military living away from home, they sponsor an annual picnic at Camp Birchwood and an annual ice cream social. The team also creates welcoming spaces for all guests to St. John.

Discipleship Ministry Team is tasked with developing and nurturing adult discipleship opportunities, also known as Worship+, including opportunities on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Earth Stewardship works with the Trustees to help St. John be a green church. The committee advocate for responsible stewardship of God’s creation in our church, homes and wider community.

The LGBT Outreach Ministry Team extends the congregation’s ministry to the LGBTQ+ community and coordinates opportunities within the church to be welcoming to all persons.

Children's Ministry Team works with the Christian Education staff in developing educational and fellowship ministries for our children. They meet monthly, time to be determined.

We are SO excited to welcome to our staff team Patti Butcher. Patti will be our new Administrative Assistant who will be caring for our membership and giving records. Patti comes with a wealth of experience having served in a similar role for Anchor Park UMC for the past 13 years. Patti will begin her work in the office on June 1. Andy Bartel Lead Pastor
Andy and his wife Kate have returned to Alaska with their boys James and Angus after 10 years in the Dakotas.
Andy and Kate were heavily involved with Birchwood Camp, St. John’s youth group and as the Sunday evening music leader. The Bartel’s left Alaska for Andy to answer the call to ministry and attend seminary. He comes to St. John the recent former lead pastor of Central United Methodist Church in Milbank, South Dakota.

Nico recently graduated from Boston University School of Theology with a Master's of Divinity Degree in Global and Community Engagement and a Graduate Certificate in Conflict Transformation. He brings a deep passion and calling to work for justice and is excited to come alongside and work with St. John. Nico is a lifelong Washingtonian and his family currently resides in the Seattle-Tacoma area. He is very excited for the new adventures Alaska has to offer.
Robbie Brawner - Director of Youth Ministries
Robbie plans and organizes youth ministry at St. John, as well as the College Ministry and Young Adults. Before joining the church staff, Robbie was a volunteer youth leader for five years, and coordinator for Mini-Methodists and Children’s Choir. Robbie offers 20 years of childcare experience. She and her husband Nick have two daughters, Bailey who is headed to seminary at Boston University, and Allison who is attends University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Director of Children’s Ministries
As Director of Children’s Ministry, Judith coordinates, implements and creates programming for children and their families. Before joining the staff, Judith volunteered with St. John's Children’s Ministry 2003-2008. She holds a degree in elementary education. Judith is a life long Methodist - her father is an ordained United Methodist elder and serves at Turnagain UMC. She is a military spouse and has had the opportunity to be an active part of many United Methodist Churches. Judith likes to teach, hike, bike and fish. She and her husband Brent have three daughters, Emily, Elizabeth and Hannah.
Erin Day joined the St. John staff August, 2015 as Director of Engagement. Erin believes in radical hospitality, good food and the power of grace. She grew up in Anchorage, lived in Texas for a decade, then returned to launch and direct a new statewide sports ministry based in Anchorage. Her role at St. John includes welcoming new faces, helping people find their unique niche in our spiritual community and encouraging all members to explore the ways God has equipped them to be active ambassadors of His Kingdom on Earth. Erin also loves cheese, throwing great parties and lifting heavy barbells. She and her husband Heath have two awesome kiddos, Charyse and Trace.
